As many as two-thirds of civil cases in district courts relate to land and property matters, shows a survey of Indian litigants released last week by Daksh, a Bangalore-based civil society organisation.

Most of the litigants in the country earn less than Rs. 3 lakh a year, says a new survey by the Bengaluru-based civil society organisation DAKSH.

While the average pendency of a case before a High Court in the country is 1,098 days — three years — it is marginally lower in the Karnataka High Court with an average pendency of 1,039 days.

BENGALURU: There were 16,01,760 cases pending before 18 ofthe 24 high courts in the country, according to data portal (www.dakshlegal.in), established by DAKSH, a civil society .

Judicial delay must be discussed in the public sphere and not just as an internal, administrative matter to get a methodical solution.

That India’s courts are clogged with long-pending cases is well-known, but the texture of the problem is something we’ve known little about so far.

Nearly a quarter of the cases pending in High Courts are still at the admission stage; in the Karnataka High Court alone, a Company Petition has been awaiting admission since 1985.
