The Role of the Election Commission as a Guardian of Democracy | DAKSH Annual Lecture

DAKSH is excited to announce its Fourteenth Annual Constitution Day Lecture on 30 November 2025, at the Bangalore International Centre at 6:30 PM.

The guest speaker for the event is Dr. S. Y. Quraishi, Former Chief Election Commissioner of India.

Our Election Commission is responsible for conducting free and fair elections for over 900 million voters across a vast and diverse nation. Recent electoral cycles have raised questions about the Commission’s independence, impartiality, and ability to enforce the Model Code of Conduct uniformly. Questions about the preparation of voter rolls, the timing of rounds of elections and the handling of hate speech have sparked debates about whether this body is sufficiently insulated from executive influence. As we observe Constitution Day, it is crucial to examine how the framers envisioned the Election Commission and whether contemporary challenges require us to reimagine the institutional safeguards that protect the integrity of India’s electoral democracy.

Date: Sunday, November 30

State of Tribunals 2025: A Baseline Report on India’s Commercial Tribunals

DAKSH is pleased to invite you to the launch of their landmark report “State of Tribunals 2025: A Baseline Report on India’s Commercial Tribunals”, part of our Transforming Tribunals Project.

Commercial tribunals play a critical role in India’s ease of doing business vision, serving as a vital link to ensure investor confidence, business liquidity, and timely resolution of disputes. Originally envisioned to deliver speed, expertise, and investor confidence, commercial tribunals today face persistent challenges, including high pendency, locked-up capital, chronic vacancies, and governance gaps. DAKSH’s baseline report maps these pressures across commercial tribunals, including the NCLT, NCLAT, APTEL, ITAT, CESTAT, SAT, DRT, DRAT, and GSTAT, and proposes pathways to strengthen their functioning.

Venue: Central Delhi (details shared upon registration)
Date: Thursday, September 25
Time: 5 pm onwards

DAKSH is pleased to invite you to a webinar on “Fast-tracking M&A Approvals and the NCLT“, part of our Transforming Tribunals in India series. DAKSH invites you to a thought-provoking webinar on improving judicial efficiency through better case scheduling. This session will feature a discussion on the paper “Service Operations for Justice-on-Time: A Data-Driven Queueing Approach,” by Nitin Bakshi, Jeunghyun Kim, and Ramandeep S. Randhawa, which explores innovative ways to reduce judicial delays by up to 65%—without increasing the number of judges.

Seventy-five years ago, on 26 January 1950, the Constitution of India came into force.
